Just returned from a trip to North Germany along the North Sea up to the Danish border. Visited with my artists colleagues that have been with me in China and of course family. I'm impressed with the quality of life and their fervor for adventure. The light this time of the year is flat grey. Zero contrast and the weather moves across the sky with incredible speed. The fish is excellent. Herring is particularly good. Lightly smoked. Eaten cold it is succulent beyond compare. As far as 2011 goes??? I don't know which was harder this year or the year I got drafted. Although my new sculptures are exciting. Friendships have grown deeper. Of course my family still loves me.

May the light of the new year shine with great furor on us all.

Unknown Origin is fabricated from stainless steel approximately 22" high. It is the third in the table top series created this year. Actually it is the last sculpture for 2011. These pieces Verging On Sin, Rubble, and Unknown Origin are quite pleasurable to create. There technically changeling, and exotic. I'm able to work through ideas quickly. They embrace poetry of form, sensuality, and light. In Seattle they can be viewed at the Woodside Braseth Gallery 2101 Ninth Ave.

New Sculpture Rubble

Rubble, is the the latest Bronze / Stainless table top sculpture 22"x16"x16. I broke my Calcaneus bone in my right foot this summer.

I had a sculpture mounted to the top of a telephone pole and a strong wind blew off two small pieces. I climbed to the top using a ladder. While doing the repairs the pole broke off at ground level. Needless to say I have not been able to do heavy work so I'm continuing with smaller pieces.

I like working on this scale and love the material. It is technically challenging and aesthetically pleasing. This type of work allows me to use all my metal smithing skills. Much fun.

Verging On Sin

Verging On Sin
Completed 8/ 4/ 11.
Stainless steel and bronze.
22" in most directions.
100 pounds

This sphere is the result of last winters design studies. The shapes of mass are interacting on the exterior as well as the interior of the sphere. The sphere itself has not been formally completed but it's visual presence is enough to imply the spherical form yet retain the excitement of it's creation.
The use of polished bronze and stainless incites the interplay of color and light within the sculpture giving it a lively presence.

New York Trip

Went to New York City for ten days. Loved the city of course and had a hard time leaving. Visited with my sculptor friend Peter Lundburg. Spent a few days in his home in Vermont. Very fun. The rest of the time was spent in the city doing the museums and the art seen. Stayed a couple of days in Mark di Suvero's studio. Toured his installation on Governors Island and toured Storm King. Now I'm back in my studio and am finishing off a smaller sphere fabricated in aluminum. It looks as though I may be off to Dubai in the near future.

This last trip was a quick one, five days. Intense jet lag. The Beijing Yidongyuan Sculpture Production Center did a good job on the fabrication and finish of this sphere for Tsinghua University. I'm not sure about the color. I think this style would be better in Stainless Steel. This is not it's permeant location. They will be moving it when the site is ready. Check out the bamboo scaffolding in the back ground. It is supporting transplanted mature trees.

I'm off to Beijing in the morning. The Tsinghua University in Beijing will be unveiling my new sphere. It was commissioned last year and is now ready for the public. Also this trip I will be bring a maquette to be cast in bronze. It is about 20" in diameter. A little gem.

These new pieces are fabricated in aluminum. Normally I don't work in this metal but they may be shipped to China for commissions hence the lighter weight material and it is still relatively inexpensive to work in. The vertical thrusting attitude and the combination of balance as well as asymmetry intrigues me.

This Euclid in bronze was the last sculpture finished in 2k10. It is about 36" in diameter as is the 2k06 steel original. It will also have a black granite pedestal. I may do an addition. Not sure at this time. Holiest of Holies has been installed at it's new home on Lopez Island Wa. A very beautiful installation. For starters of 2k11 I will be unveiling a large sphere commissioned for the Tsinghua University in Beijing China on April 9th. Work in my studio consists of making models for various proposals due this year. There you have it for January of this year.

Here are a few images from Taizhou, which is south of Shanghai - the last city I've stayed before flying back home. Christiana and I did a lot of bicycle riding and walking all over the city. It was fun and we felt more connected to the Chinese people.

Well, sorry we haven't been updating the Blog, but as you all know Christiana and I were in China until the end of November.........a lot of work was waiting and lots of visitors etc etc.
But, we are trying to keep it going. So please be patient!

Well, Christiana is coming to visit in a couple of days and that means no more pictures until we get back. She posted all the photos for me, because I can't access the blog.
However, we all got bicycles again and I went down to the seaside. I have to dress a little warmer now since the temperature is dropping. Three more weeks - it is time to come home.

Yesterday we took another trip to the sea, visiting a different fishing village. It is good to get out and see some more of the culture.

I was driven to the steel yard today to take a look at the I-beams for my sphere. They cut all the beams into 8-foot sections and now the will start bending them.........we'll see.

Well, the internet has been down...........but, here we are! It is probably caused by the challenge of China adjusting to the Nobelprize for Peace, that went to a Chinese Prisoner, who is fighting for human rights.

We did a couple of trips, one to the mountains around Taizhou and the other one to the sea. It was just amazing. These are places where tourists do not go. What a delight to see people making chop sticks and futons. Or see Chinese logging...........

My journey to Tongling began Saturday morning with a two and a half hour flight

from Beijing to Hefei, the capital city of Anhui province, along with a small team

of CRI reporters. Once we arrived at the airport in Hefei we then took a two and a

half hour bus ride to Tongling. It was a great ride through a part of China most

people never get a chance to see. We passed rice farm after rice farm watching

farmers walk across the land engaged in various tasks. I felt like I was witnessing

something from a different period of China's history, a time when it still remained

untouched from the outside world.

As soon as the bus crossed the busy Yangtze River we quickly entered the city

of Tongling. Although it may be one of China's smaller cities, with a mere

population of 740,000, it is definitely one of its more important ones in that it is

known as China's Ancient Bronze Capital. Copper mining is everything here,

along with gold, silver, tin, and iron.

Monday marked the opening of the First China (Tongling) International Sculpture

Exhibition which is being held at the International Copper Sculpture Park. To kick

things off, Li Ming, the mayor of Tongling, greeted the crowd filled with reporters

from various Chinese news agencies along with the artists themselves who are

visiting from all over the world.

The overcast weather and grey skies did little to dampen the mood and spirit of

the event; an international celebration of art and bronze. For a city this size to

host an event such as this was rather impressive. Although I don't know much

about sculpting but judging from everything that was on display today I didn't feel

alienated or dumbfounded. Each piece throughout the park was carefully

handpicked and I found all of the works to be just as equally interesting. At the

end the closing of the ceremony, Bernard F. Hosey, a US/Canadian artist,

delivered a moving and inspiring speech about how he was inspired as an artist

by the famous Chinese poet Li Bai, who died in the nearby Yangtze River while

trying to embrace the reflection of the moon. It was a fitting and appropriate way

to begin an outdoor celebration of art and bronze in the small mountain city

otherwise known as the birthplace of China's bronze civilization.

Other artists such as Lilya Pobornikova from Bulgaria, Ayla Turan from Turkey,

Xuxo Vazquez Pardo from Spain, and Jo Kley from Germany, and Hock Auh Teh

from the United Kingdom all mingled with the crowd as they represented their art,

and in some ways I guess their country.

Later on Li Ming and the Party Chief and Municipal People's Congress Chairman

Yao Yuzhou walked throughout the park admiring the international bronze

sculptures on display.

Over the next few days in Tongling, bronze sculpting will be celebrated and

admired by people from all over China and different parts of the world. This is the

first time the city of Tongling has been asked to host the event, and so far the city

has done an excellent job. The next few days will be filled with small seminars

and exhibits all designed to celebrate the artistic beauty of bronze. The event

itself is the perfect way to enjoy a city very few foreigners know anything about.

We stayed overnight in the village. The food was the worst so far and I basically stayed with rice! But, it was a beautiful place and the people were very nice. We hiked up to one of the mountain tops and it felt very good.
In about an hour I will give my speech at the Opening Ceremony in Tongling. Lots of Government Officials will be present - it is quite exiting!

I visited the park in Tongling (which I can see from my hotel) to see my sculpture "Sphere in Slab". Some of you might have seen the 7in Bronze model at my house - this one is about 7feet.

Finally the color has been applied. It looks great. The workers did a really good job on the primer and they added two coats of red paint.
I left for Tongling - my next station. This is where my Bonze piece is done. On the 12th I have to give a speech at the opening ceremony. Tomorrow, we will go on a sightseeing tour. There are nice mountains around............if you can see them with all the smog!

Well, I found a new restaurant that serves western food and has internet access also. The waitresses are young students that have English in school. They are having fun talking to me, and, of course I am having fun too.

I am in Tangshan by myself, trying to finish my sculpture. All other Artists went home, so nobody to talk to..........Well, some of the Chinese can come up with a few sentence in English.

So, I am riding my bicycle around, exploring the area and getting some exercise. Also, walking through the work camp and watch the progress of the other sculptures. Some are getting close to being finished. My sculpture is getting primed and it takes time. So hopefully next week it will be painted! Then, off to the next place - Tongling.

Every morning after breakfast I ride my bicycle to the work camp, trying to use different routes. Found an area with intact monuments, that have not been destroyed by the 1976 earthquake. In the same area I saw a beautiful spider about 3 in long.......and with my new camera and the technology we have, you have a chance to see it also!
Most of the pieces of my sculpture are welded together and in a few days the assembly will start.

Another Day in Tangshan

........ inspecting the progress of my Sculpture at the Tangshan work camp. After being away for a few days, mistakes have been made, but they are fixed and it is looking good.
I went to a Gallery with some of my Artist friends and was looking at some beautiful bronze pieces.

Tomorrow, the Governor of the Hebei province and the Mayor of Tangshan will visit the work camp.

We just got back from Tongling today. This time we took the airplane. The internet connection was bad, if there was one at all. My sculpture will be fabricated instead of cast, using bronze sheet metal.
Our group did a boat trip on the Yangtze River. The food was very Chinese.........Fish out of the Yangtze river, Chicken Feet fried or cooked, BabyBirds (you know, after they just hatched, with their big eyes....no feathers....) and thank god rice.

I was on the road for 27 hours - 20 hour train to He Fei and 2 hour bus ride to final destination Tongling - An exhausting, but interesting trip. Crossing the Yangtze River was impressive!

We arrived 8am at our hotel in Tongling and were introduced to other participating Artists. After lunch I was ready for a nap!

Well, I am riding my bicycle to the work camp everyday - and I am enjoying it. Early in the morning, on my way to camp, I discovered a beautiful lake - still a little fog in the air.
The first stone blocks arrived, which will be looking very different in a month!

Tomorrow I will take the train from Tangshan to Tongling (Copper Mountain) with three other Artists and our Manager Gracely. Tongling is about 100 miles west of Shanghai on the Yangtze River. The City of Tongling commissioned a 10-foot Bronze Sculpture Sphere in Slab. I am going to visit the foundry to look at the mold for my sculpture. I am excited!

Last night we went to a movie theater and watched a new production of the 1976 Earthquake. Which was quite interesting. To get to know more about the city Tangshan and the time after the earthquake we went to the Memorial site/park.
